When someone asks, “What’s your story?” You blank out. At least I did.
It had me twisted for years after excavating every cell of my body and still not being clear on the missing piece.
The problem was that I was focusing on the missing piece. I was trying hard to get clear.
My old story: I didn’t have one to tell.
And while knowing that we ALL have our unique story to tell I just couldn’t identify what mine was. And that’s part of the puzzle.
It’s so easy to get in your head about a question like that and make it more significant than it needs to be. I was trying to identify that last piece and just couldn’t. And then it hit me, just last month (no kidding):
If life is a story that you create why not create a story that fulfills all of your dreams and desires?
Think about this. You may already be doing this in every area of your life, and if so – congratulations! You focus on your dreams yet find they’re still no closer to being fulfilled today. Why is that?
Maybe you know that it’s all about your attitude and the energy attached to that energy. Then there’s what you believe in your conscious vs. subconscious mind… and that is where I identified the glitch.
Have you ever noticed the energy that hits you in the face when scrolling down the newsfeed on social media?
All the posts competing for your attention as you scroll down the newsfeed? Ads, opinions, puppy videos. It’s so easy to get caught up in other people’s realities and stories and then forget to ask yourself what story you wish to create for yourself.
Once that awareness hits, you still may have a story or two that limits your success that you can’t find the words for or act on. Perhaps you’re not building your business because you can’t figure out your story.
It’s so easy to go on autopilot even when you have good intentions. Some, like me, go with the flow and follow the energy, and then there are structured plans and to-do lists which work for some, and not for others. No matter what mix you need it starts with asking questions.
Here are 3 ideas to get unstuck:
#1 Shift your focus – the things you think about. Instead of focusing on the problem, focus on the end result. Easy right? When you feel great it’s a given, and when you don’t there may be a gap between what you know, how you feel, and taking action.
Ask yourself how you can serve YOU today before everyone else. What do you NEED to stay happy throughout the day? A workout? A chat with a buddy? A game of golf? Shoot hoops? Meditation? Some time with your partner?
#2 What IS the story you would like to create for your life? What are the successes you wish to achieve? Small or big? What would energize you to get up in the morning and honor you AND those around you to the best of your ability?
#3 What, if any, are the beliefs that are stopping you? Now, instead of focusing on the problems, simply write them down, identify the opposite belief and ask yourself, “how you can create more of that today?”
There are many tools and processes out there that can help, and many coaches can help you with your specific needs depending on what that is. In sports it’s a given to have a coach, why not in business and life?
